The IADI Secretariat is pleased to announce the webinar “Legal Approaches to Tokenisation” with Professor Mirjam Eggen (University Bern, Switzerland) and Linda Jeng (Digital Self Labs and Georgetown University) on 15 January, 13:00 CET.

Mirjam Eggen and Linda Jeng will present on their recent book, which provides a comprehensive and comparative analysis of how legal systems worldwide are addressing the challenges posed by digital assets. Their presentation will highlight the distinct legal characteristics of stablecoins compared to tokenised deposits, alongside the evolving legal frameworks that govern these innovations. They will specifically examine the use of stablecoins and tokenised deposits in payments, focusing on the legal foundations underpinning these transactions. This includes a detailed analysis of the U.S. legal framework for stablecoins, with particular attention to the GENIUS Act and UCC Article 12.

Their insights hold significant relevance for deposit insurance, as they explore how legal frameworks are evolving to accommodate emerging technologies. This evolution is critical for ensuring the legal clarity required for deposit insurers to effectively safeguard depositors in a tokenised environment. Additionally, the discussion will assess whether deposit tokens and stablecoins should fall within the scope of deposit insurance protection.
